MPS cancels classes only in extreme weather conditions. Last year, schools were closed on December 13 and 14 due to heavy snowfall that impeded school bus travel. Prior to that, MPS had not closed a day of school since the 198-99 school year and had not shut down for two days in a row in recent memory. It is most likey that school will remain open.
In the event of winter weather necessitating a "snow day" Minneapolis Public Schools will be listed as closed on all the major news networks and radio stations, as well as on the Minneapolis Public School website.
Please send your children to school with adequate coats, hats, and mittens. If you are in need of assistance in acquiring proper cold weather clothing please contact our school social worker at 612-668-2032.
Recess: Jenny Lind recess policy states that children have outdoor recess if it is above 0 degrees by temperature and wind chill factor. Children are outside for 10-12 minutes. We believe fresh air helps children concentrate better in the afternoon. Recess is also a time for children to learn a new game and play with their friends. We have a structured recess period, where children are assigned an activity and play cooperatively. Unless we receive a note from a physician which states a medical reason why they should not go outside, they will go outside. Our health assistant is not available to supervise children during the lunch/recess hours. Students with a medical reason will be supervised in the lunchroom.
