What do students learn in music class?

All students at Jenny Lind Elementary will have the opportunity to learn and apply musical concepts according to the Minnesota State Standards. The standards and examples of learning activities are listed below.

Create

  • Writing original music using musical notation (notes and rhythms on the 5-line staff) and graphic/non-standard notation (images, pictures, words, stories, objects, and more)
  • Songwriting - which can include writing lyrics, creating parts on instruments, and putting together beats in GarageBand
  • Improvising using instruments, rapping, and dancing

Perform

  • Sharing music with classmates in class
  • Sharing music with the school at assemblies
  • Putting on a concert or showcase for families and the community

Respond

  • Descibing what we hear in live or recorded music
  • Transcribing heard melodies and rhythms
  • Writing a story to go along with a piece of music

General Music

Students in grades PreK-3 and 5 participate in general music on a 3- or 5-day rotation, respectively. Students learn the standards listed above by playing instruments, singing, playing games, creating music, and responding.

Instrumental Music

Students in grades 4 and 5 have the opportunity to participate in instrumental music in addition to their arts specialist time.

About Alec Paquin (he/him, they/them)

Alec holds in a degree and licensure in K-12 Instrumental and General Music Education from the University of Minnesota. 2019-2020 is Alec's second year teaching with Minneapolis Public Schools. In addition to teaching, you can find Alec playing shows and gigs with various groups around the Twin Cities as a tubist, trombonist, and bassist. Alec lives in South Minneapolis where he greatly enjoys cooking, bicycling, drinking good coffee, and spending quality time with loved ones.
